Clinical Breast Cancer Program
Patient Experience Services for Patients

Why is there a psychiatry program for breast patients?

Psychiatry Program The Psychiatry Program assists individuals who are having difficulty making decisions. Typically, people faced with the diagnosis of a serious illness or with the realization that they may be at high risk are overwhelmed by a range of feelings, including anxiety, sadness and confusion. These feelings can sometimes hinder a patient's ability to think clearly at the very time when clarity in thought is most needed for making critical treatment decisions. Frequently, a patient's family also experiences difficulties, since lifestyles may need to change to accommodate their loved one's emotional and medical needs.

How does the Psychiatry Program Help?

The program and its services are administered by psychiatrists who specialize in the treatment of breast cancer patients and their families. Knowledgeable about all the medical choices that patients may need to make, these psychiatrists can help identify important questions that may have been left unasked — questions that, when answered, may provide information patients need to arrive at a sound decision.

Psychiatrists continue to work with patients throughout their experience, helping them to develop the coping skills they may need to adjust to lifestyle changes or side effects related to their chosen treatments. In sum, they help their patients and family members to move forward in life. For more information, call 212.305.9985
